Have you ever been overcome by the distress of a broken heart, as you slowly watch the world around you slip deeper and deeper into the bottomless pit of hopelessness? I have. But we should all try to remember that this world is not our home and it is passing away. The writer to the Hebrews wrote, “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.” (Hebrews 13:14) The reality is this is not our reality. We are sojourners in this strange and backward land of compromise and cruelty. We should constantly be longing for our heavenly home and know we are not long for this world. Every heartbeat takes us one moment closer to the revelation of a new land in which we have our permanent citizenship in a place prepared by God.

Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.  And where I go you know, and the way you know.” (John 14:1–4) We have a forever home whose builder and maker is our God. Are you excited about it and the journey to get there? Are we living in a way that brings glory to God in our waiting and watching for His coming? I pray we would. For the coming of our Lord Jesus draws ever closer with the rhythmic passing of every second we wait for His powerful and glorious return.

“And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” (Romans 13:11–14)
