Romans 1:16-17
We turn our attention to one of the most important and foundational statements in all of Scripture: Romans 1:16-17. In just two verses, the Apostle Paul presents what many scholars call the “thesis statement” of the book of Romans. As Leon Morris famously observed, the significance of these words is far greater than their brevity.
Paul writes to believers in Rome—at the center of political power, cultural pressure, and spiritual opposition—and he begins with a bold declaration: “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ.” In a society where allegiance to Caesar was expected and the message of a crucified Jewish Savior seemed foolish or even shameful, Paul makes clear that the gospel is not something to hide, soften, or apologize for.
Why? Because the gospel is not merely a message—it is the power of God. It has the supernatural power to save, transform, and make people right with God. This power is available to everyone who believes, regardless of background, status, or past, because salvation has always—and will always—be by faith.
As we study this passage, we’ll explore what it means to live “from faith to faith,” why righteousness comes through belief rather than performance, and why the just—those made right with God—are called to live by faith from beginning to end.
