Leviticus 4:1-35
Leviticus 4 meets us in a place most of us know well but rarely name: the world of “I didn’t mean to.” We rush through our days, speak too quickly, overlook people, make careless choices—and only later realize we’ve wounded someone or drifted from what pleases God.
We tend to shrug and say, “I didn’t intend that,” as if unintended sins matter less. But Leviticus 4 tells a different story. It shows that even the sins we never planned, never noticed, or only discovered afterward are taken seriously by a holy God—and graciously covered by Him.
The refrain of the chapter is stunning: “and it shall be forgiven him.” That is the purpose of the whole sacrificial system described here. God is not highlighting hidden sin to trap His people in deeper guilt, but to assure them that He has already made provision for it.
Long before you saw the problem, He provided the remedy. For every priest, every leader, every ordinary Israelite—for every pastor and every believer today—God’s message in Leviticus 4 is the same: no sin is too hidden, too accidental, or too ordinary for the blood of the substitute.
As we study “Unintentional Sin,” we are really learning how to walk through Monday morning with a clear conscience, bringing even our unseen failures to the cross and hearing, by faith, “and it shall be forgiven him.” The refrain that binds the chapter together is glorious: “and it shall be forgiven him” (vv. 20, 26, 31, 35). That is the point of the whole apparatus.
