Romans 1:26-32

This is one of the most sobering passages in all of Scripture. In these verses, Paul describes what happens when humanity rejects the Creator and instead worships the created. We are told three times, “God gave them over.” This is not merely a description of individual sins but of a society in spiritual decline — a culture that has deliberately pushed God out of its thinking.
Paul was not writing to a morally conservative culture that agreed with him. He was writing to first-century Rome — a world saturated with sexual immorality, idolatry, exploitation, pride, and the public celebration of sin. The Roman Empire normalized what God called unnatural. Sexual perversion was not hidden; it was institutionalized. Emperors openly practiced immorality. Prostitution was regulated. Pleasure was exalted. Into that environment, Paul boldly proclaimed God’s design and God’s truth.
This passage shows us a pattern:
• When God is rejected, worship is distorted.
• When worship is distorted, desires are disordered.
• When desires are disordered, thinking becomes corrupted.
• When thinking is corrupted, evil/vile behavior follows.
• When behavior is celebrated, judgment/consequences deepen.
This is not just about sexuality, as many focus on — it is about the human heart. It is about what happens when we refuse to “retain God in our knowledge.” It is about the consequences of exchanging truth for THE lie.
We do not study this passage to stir up self-righteousness, but humility. Because the sins listed here move from what we consider extreme to what feels all too common for us today: envy, pride, disobedience, and unforgiveness, as a few examples. The same fallen heart is behind them all. Before we read this as a condemnation of “them,” we must remember: apart from the wonderful grace of God, this is the story of us.
