Romans 2:1-16
Over the past decade, our culture has become very adept at judging others. Social media, news headlines, and cancel culture have trained us to focus on others’ failures while often ignoring our own issues.
We read about society’s sins and quickly think, “Look how bad those people are.” However, Paul expects that exact reaction from his readers in Rome. After revealing humanity’s obvious rebellion in Romans 1, he shifts the focus in Romans 2 to a different person—the morally educated individual who believes they are better than those just described.
In Paul’s day and our own, many religious people believed their morality and heritage guaranteed God’s favor, but Paul challenges that view by showing that God’s judgment is fair and grounded in truth. Romans 2 acts as a mirror, and when we honestly look at ourselves in it, we find something uncomfortable: the problem isn’t just the sinner out there—it’s the human heart, including our own.
