The Hebrews were to offer sacrifices to God on altars made of earth.

If an altar of stone was made, it was not to be crafted with tool, it was to be built with unhewn stones.

They were not to have steps ascending to the altar so their “nakedness” wouldn’t be exposed to those below as they climbed the stairs.
